History

The name “Ambar” comes from an old granary once found in the nearby village of Cvitović, where grain and food were stored. The restaurant’s founder, Mile Turkalj, often spent nights there, further deepening the connection to local tradition. Although the original granary no longer exists, its legacy lives on through the restaurant’s dedication to preserving regional culinary heritage.

Above the restaurant stands Napoleon’s storehouse, a relic from around 200 years ago, built during the time of French Marshal Auguste Frédéric Louis Viesse de Marmont. His mission was to grow and gather agricultural products in Slunj to support Napoleon’s army. This historical connection to local agriculture is woven into the very fabric of Ambar today.

Sustainability & Philosophy

Ambar Restaurant works hand in hand with local farmers and producers from the surrounding region, ensuring every dish tells a story of origin, care, and connection. Seasonal ingredients are at the heart of every menu, reducing transport emissions and food waste while celebrating Croatia’s rich agricultural heritage.

Ambar’s philosophy is to create meaningful moments: where guests slow down, reconnect with nature, and enjoy genuine hospitality in an authentic setting.

Team Building & Activities

Groups can enjoy private dinners, cooking demonstrations, or interactive tastings featuring local specialities and wines. Combine your visit with team-building activities like exploring the waterfalls of Rastoke, visiting local farms, or discovering nearby Plitvice Lakes.

A perfect balance of nature, culture and connection, ideal for corporate retreats or incentive groups looking for authenticity and inspiration.

Leisure & Surroundings

Located in the picturesque village of Rastoke, known as “the small Plitvice”, and just 30 minutes from Plitvice Lakes National Park, this area offers endless opportunities for hiking, cycling, sightseeing and relaxing by the rivers of Slunjcica and Korana.

Guests can combine a visit to Plitvice Lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with an evening of authentic dining at Ambar, the perfect ending to a day in nature.
